Derbyshire Jewish Community is deeply concerned by the antisemitic attack in Australia at Bondi Beach, in which Jewish people were murdered while peacefully celebrating the festival of Chanukah with their friends and families.
Although this attack took place overseas, incidents of antisemitic violence have a direct impact on Jewish communities everywhere. In the UK, particularly following incidents such as the Manchester Yom Kippur attack, events like this reinforce the sense of vulnerability many Jewish people experience simply by being Jewish or part of a minority community.
Such incidents heighten anxiety and fear, and underline the importance of ensuring that Jewish people feel safe, supported, and understood within wider society.
Our thoughts are with the victims and their families. May their memory be a blessing. We are grateful to local residents who have reached out with messages of support, which are appreciated at times like this.
