Mitzvah Day 2025 was marked by a month-long programme of volunteering by members of the Derbyshire Jewish Community, who gave their time, energy, and commitment in support of Joybank Sheffield.
Joybank Sheffield is a community food bank that provides vital support to individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. In addition to supplying food and essential household items, Joybank works to promote dignity, independence, and longer-term stability for those it serves, making a significant difference across Sheffield and the surrounding areas.
Throughout the month of Mitzvah Day, DJC volunteers supported Joybank with practical, hands-on tasks, contributing directly to the running of the service and helping ensure that support reached those who needed it most. This ongoing commitment reflected core Jewish values, including chesed (kindness), tzedakah (charity), and collective responsibility.
We were delighted to be joined by members of Seven Hills Synagogue, whose involvement highlighted the strength of cooperation between neighbouring Jewish communities. Their participation added to the sense of shared purpose that ran throughout the month.
The Derbyshire Jewish Community would like to offer its heartfelt thanks to everyone who volunteered during Mitzvah Day 2025. Giving up time over several weeks is no small commitment, and your generosity and dedication made a real and tangible impact. We are also grateful to Joybank Sheffield for welcoming our volunteers and for the essential work they continue to do year-round.
Mitzvah Day 2025 was a powerful reminder that sustained acts of kindness, spread over time, can be just as impactful as those carried out on a single day.
