Megillot Miserable: Purimspiel 2026

While this Purimspiel is hosted by Nottingham Liberal Synagogue (NLS), I feel the Derbyshire Jewish Community has a good claim to it too. NLS Purimspiels are the work of Derby resident, Mike Sacker, who year after year combines the Purim story with what often seems like a completely incompatible story from pop culture. Last year, we didn’t think he could combine Purim with Austin Powers, but he proved us wrong.  This year, the task has been even more challenging as the cast were keen to combine the Purim story with Les Miserables. Yes, Les Miserables, the one where it feels like most of the characters have a tragic end. Can he do it? Can Mike combine what should be an uplifting story of Jewish resilience with the failed June revolution of 1832?

Not only do we have a Derby playwright, we also have Derby actors!  Mark Bowyer plays King Thenardierus, the booze and party loving Emperor of Persia who has bling for every occasion. I’m doing a bit of everything: starting as a Zoroastrian Magus, becoming a Persian party goer and ‘lovely lady’, and ending the play as a flag waving revolutionary. I’m sure we have all been impressed by Woody Allen’s ability to write, direct, and star.  Well, we have our DJC version in Mike, who is also stepping into the role of Older Yoni Valjean/Mordechai.

If you would like to enjoy an hour or so of Purim mayhem followed by food and schmooze, come to NLS on Saturday 7th March at 6pm.  Tickets are available here:

Non-NLS members are very welcome.

Do come and join the fun.  Find out exactly why I am showing my petticoats to Mark.
